Secret Team: The CIA and Its Allies in Control of the United States and the World [read online for free] by L. Fletcher Prouty, Ballantine Books in New York, 1991.

The Secret Team, L. Fletcher Prouty’s CIA exposé, was first published in the 1970s, but virtually all copies of the book disappeared upon distribution, purchased en masse by shady "private buyers." Certainly Prouty’s amazing allegations—that the U-2 Crisis of 1960 was fixed to sabotage Eisenhower-Khrushchev talks, and that President Kennedy was assassinated to keep the U.S., and its defense budget, in Vietnam—cannot have pleased the CIA. Though suppressed (until now), The Secret Team was an important influence for Oliver Stone’s Academy Award-winning film JFK and countless other works on U.S. government conspiracies, and it raises the same crucial question today that it did on its first appearance: who, in fact, is in control of the United States and the world?

The Secret Team is a book by L. Fletcher Prouty, a former colonel in the US Air Force, first published in 1973. From 1955 to 1963 Prouty was the "Focal Point Officer" for contacts between the CIA and the Pentagon on matters relating to military support for "special operations" but he was not assigned to the CIA and was not bound by any oath of secrecy. It was one of the first tell-all books about the inner workings of the CIA and was an important influence on the Oliver Stone movie JFK. But the main thrust of the book is how the CIA started as a think tank to analyze intelligence gathered from military sources but has grown to the monster it has become. The CIA had no authority to run their own agents or to carry out covert operations but they quickly did both and much more. This book tells about things they actually did and a lot about how they operate.

In Prouty’s own words, from the 1997 edition of The Secret Team:

This is the fundamental game of the Secret Team. They have this power because they control secrecy and secret intelligence and because they have the ability to take advantage of the most modern communications system in the world, of global transportation systems, of quantities of weapons of all kinds, and when needed, the full support of a world-wide U.S. military supporting base structure. They can use the finest intelligence system in the world, and most importantly, they have been able to operate under the canopy of an assumed, ever-present enemy called "Communism." It will be interesting to see what "enemy" develops in the years ahead. It appears that "UFO’s and Aliens" are being primed to fulfill that role for the future. To top all of this, there is the fact that the CIA, itself, has assumed the right to generate and direct secret operations.
Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time [read online for free] by Carroll Quigley, Macmillan in New York, 1966.

Excerpt: This radical Right fairy tale, which is now an accepted folk myth in many groups in America, pictured the recent history of the United States, in regard to domestic reform and in foreign affairs, as a well-organized plot by extreme Left-wing elements.... This myth, like all fables, does in fact have a modicum of truth. There does exist, and has existed for a generation, an international Anglophile network which operates, to some extent, in the way the Radical right believes the Communists act. In fact, this network, which we may identify as the Round Table Groups, has no aversion to cooperating with the Communists, or any other group, and frequently does so. I know of the operation of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960’s, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and have, for much of my life, been close to it and to many of its instruments. I have objected, both in the past and recently, to a few of its policies... but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known.

Excerpt: The powers of financial capitalism had another far reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements, arrived at in frequent private meetings and conferences. The apex of the system was the Bank for International Settlements in Basle, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the worlds’ central banks which were themselves private corporations. The growth of financial capitalism made possible a centralization of world economic control and use of this power for the direct benefit of financiers and the indirect injury of all other economic groups.

America’s Secret Establishment: An Introduction to the Order of Skull & Bones [read online for free] by Antony C. Sutton, Trine Day in Walterville, 2002.

For 170 years they have met in secret. From out of their initiates come presidents, senators, judges, cabinet secretaries, and plenty of spooks. They are the titans of finance and industry and have now installed a third member as United States President George W. Bush. This intriguing behind-the-scenes look documents Yale’s secretive society, the Order of the Skull and Bones, and its prominent members, numbering among them Tafts, Rockefellers, Pillsburys, and Bushes. Far from being a campus fraternity, the society is more concerned with the success of its members in the post-collegiate world. Included are a verified membership list, rare reprints of original Order materials revealing the interlocking power centers dominated by Bonesmen, and a peek inside the Tomb, their 140-year-old private clubhouse.

Antony C. Sutton was a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and an economics professor at California State University, Los Angeles. He is the author of 21 books, including Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism [read excerpts online for free] by Naomi Klein, Metropolitan Books in New York, 2007.

The bestselling author of No Logo shows how the global free market has exploited crises and shock for three decades, from Chile to Iraq

In her groundbreaking reporting over the past few years, Naomi Klein introduced the term disaster capitalism. Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic shock treatment, losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers.

The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman s free market economic revolution. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement s peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world from Latin America and Eastern Europe to South Africa, Russia, and Iraq.

At the core of disaster capitalism is the use of cataclysmic events to advance radical privatization combined with the privatization of the disaster response itself. Klein argues that by capitalizing on crises, created by nature or war, the disaster capitalism complex now exists as a booming new economy, and is the violent culmination of a radical economic project that has been incubating for fifty years.

The COINTELPRO Papers: Documents from the FBI’s Secret Wars Against Dissent in the United States [read online for free] by Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall, South End Press in Cambridge, 2001.

Readers anxious about the loss of civil liberties under George W. Bush will find ground for their fears—and suggestions for activism—in The COINTELPRO Papers. Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall’s exposé of America’s political police force, the FBI, reveals the iron fist hiding beneath the velvet glove of compassionate conservatism.

Reproducing many original FBI memos, the authors provide extensive analysis of the agency’s treatment of the Left, from the Communist Party in the 1950s to the Central America solidarity movement in the 1980s. Ward Churchill’s substantial new preface to this South End Press Classics edition updates the cases of several incarcerated Black Panthers and analyzes the events at Ruby Ridge and Waco, as well as the wars on drugs and terrorism. Churchill makes a compelling argument that US law enforcement has become thoroughly militarized, with devastating consequences for all those who work for social justice.

The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How The War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals by [read excerpts online for free] Jane Mayer, Doubleday in New York, 2008.

In the days immediately following September 11th, the most powerful people in the country were panic-stricken. The radical decisions about how to combat terrorists and strengthen national security were made in a state of utter chaos and fear, but the key players, Vice President Dick Cheney and his powerful, secretive adviser David Addington, used the crisis to further a long held agenda to enhance Presidential powers to a degree never known in U.S. history, and obliterate Constitutional protections that define the very essence of the American experiment.

THE DARK SIDE is a dramatic, riveting, and definitive narrative account of how the United States made terrible decisions in the pursuit of terrorists around the world—decisions that not only violated the Constitution to which White House officials took an oath to uphold, but also hampered the pursuit of Al Qaeda. In gripping detail, acclaimed New Yorker writer and bestselling author, Jane Mayer, relates the impact of these decisions—U.S.-held prisoners, some of them completely innocent, were subjected to treatment more reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition than the twenty-first century.

THE DARK SIDE will chronicle real, specific cases, shown in real time against the larger tableau of what was happening in Washington, looking at the intelligence gained—or not—and the price paid. In some instances, torture worked. In many more, it led to false information, sometimes with devastating results. For instance, there is the stunning admission of one of the detainees, Sheikh Ibn al-Libi, that the confession he gave under duress—which provided a key piece of evidence buttressing congressional support of going to war against Iraq—was in fact fabricated, to make the torture stop.

In all cases, whatever the short term gains, there were incalculable losses in terms of moral standing, and our country’s place in the world, and its sense of itself. THE DARK SIDE chronicles one of the most disturbing chapters in American history, one that will serve as the lasting legacy of the George W. Bush presidency.

Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion [read online for free] by Gary Webb, Seven Stories Press in New York, 2003.

Dark Alliance shows how the L.A. crack market flourished through a breathtaking combination of government negligence, greed, and criminal conduct. In its final chapters, Dark Alliance also reveals Gary Webb’s personal account of the behind-the-scenes conflict that led to his newspaper’s repudiation of its own groundbreaking series. The career-damning allegations leveled at Webb have now been joined by glowing reviews of the first edition of Dark Alliance, and the core findings of this courageous investigative reporter’s work—once fiercely denied—are now matters of public record.

This revised and updated edition of Dark Alliance adds yet another layer of damning evidence culled from hundreds of newly declassified CIA cables, and FBI and DEA reports, none of which were available at the time of the first edition. Among other revelations, these long-secret documents expose

  • How the CIA and the NSC worked with dozens of drug dealers and their companies to secretly fund right-wing Latin American guerrillas.
  • The decade-long U.S. government coverup of the CIA-Contra drug trafficking and illegal gun-running network.
  • One DEA agent’s investigation into allegations of drug trafficking at a military airbase in El Salvador.
  • How the CIA and State Department shut it down; and how the DEA undermined a criminal investigation by the FBI in order to shield a massive L.A. drug ring and protect the drug ring’s boss from arrest and exposure.
Supreme Injustice: How the High Court Hijacked Election 2000 [read excerpts online for free] by Alan M. Dershowitz, Oxford University Press in New York, 2002.

Millions of Americans were baffled and outraged by the U.S. Supreme Court’s role in deciding the presidential election of 2000 with its controversial ruling in Bush v. Gore. The Court had held a unique place in our system of checks and balances, seen as the embodiment of fairness and principle precisely because it was perceived to be above the political fray. How could it now issue a decision that reeked of partisan politics, and send to the White House a candidate who may have actually lost the election?

In Supreme Injustice, best-selling author and legal expert Alan M. Dershowitz addresses these questions head-on, at last demystifying Bush v. Gore for those who are still angered by the court’s decision but unclear about its meaning. Dershowitz—himself a former Supreme Court clerk—argues that in this case for the first time, the court’s majority let its desire for a particular partisan outcome have priority over legal principles. As in his other bestselling books, Dershowitz clarifies complex legal issues, explaining concepts such as "equal protection" and "irreparable harm." Digging deeply into their earlier writings and rulings, Dershowitz proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the justices who gave George W. Bush the presidency contradicted their previous positions to do so.

The most egregious ruling since the Dred Scott Decision, Bush v. Gore has shattered the image of the Supreme Court as a fair and impartial arbiter of important national issues. The resulting loss of the American people’s respect, Dershowitz concludes, has severely compromised the Court’s role in national affairs. And yet Dershowitz sees some benefit emerging from this constitutional crisis—if we understand its lessons and take action to prevent it from happening again.

Loser Take All: Election Fraud and The Subversion of Democracy, 2000 - 2008 [read excerpts online for free] by Mark Crispin Miller, Ig Publishing in Brooklyn, 2008.

Loser Taker All: Election Fraud and The Subversion of Democracy, 2000-2008 is an indispensable anthology of writings covering the vast election fraud that has been perpetrated by the GOP—with the Democratic Party’s acquiescence—since 2000. Among the subjects treated here are: the myth of George Bush’s victory in Florida in 2000, and FOX News’s key role in propagating it; Senator Max Cleland’s dubious defeat in Georgia in 2002; Bush’s re-election in 2004, including evidence of systematic fraud outside of Ohio; startling evidence of fraud committed in the 2006 midterm elections, which the Democrats appear to have won by a far larger margin than officially reported; and, crucially, evidence that the Republicans will attempt to steal the presidential election in 2008.

JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters [hear online for free] by James W. Douglass, Orbis Books in Maryknoll, 2008.

An astonishing new examination of the Kennedy assassination and its meaning today.

James Douglass lays out the journey that led JFK in the course of three years from his position as a traditional Cold Warrior to his determination to break with the logic of the Cold War and lead the world in an entirely different direction. This sequence of steps led his adversaries in the military and intelligence establishment to view him as a virtual traitor who had to be eliminated.

Douglass’s book has all the elements of a political thriller. But the stakes couldn’t be higher. Only by understanding the truth behind the murder of JFK can we grasp his vision and assume the urgent struggle for peace today.

Someone Would Have Talked: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Conspiracy to Mislead History [read excerpts online for free] by Larry Hancock, JFK Lancer Productions & Publications in Southlake, 2006.

Someone Would Have Talked goes beyond proving a conspiracy to murder JFK. Over 14.000 documents, White House diaries, telephone logs, and executive tape recordings detail how the new President managed a cover-up that changed the future of our country.

Forty plus years after the murder of President Kennedy, the same intuitive and popular belief exists that was common in the first hours after his assassination — that his murder occurred as the result of a conspiracy. The document releases, transcripts and tapes which have become available in the last decade only serve to confirm how many individuals and witnesses held this belief and expressed it privately but for the most part did not enter the public record.

Someone Would Have Talked is supported not only with the normal references and bibliography but also with an extensive library of exhibits and documents. Exhibits range from contemporary newspaper articles through testimony and telephone transcripts to diaries, investigative reports and memoranda. For the reader, we have set up a comprehensive website at http://www.larry-hancock.com for review of the documents and sources used for the book and noted in the endnotes.

As author Larry Hancock states in his Foreword, This history is no longer buried in the archives, it’s in front of you. As the jury you have to make the final call based on objective evaluation and judgment. Belief beyond reasonable doubt will be your decision. The history here is real, not canned in a report or a textbook—the decision for or against conspiracy and cover-up is yours.

Files on JFK [read excerpts online for free] by Wim Dankbaar, Trafford Publishing in Bloomington, Indiana, 2005.

On the eve of the 40th Anniversary of the JFK Assassination, from Stateville Correctional Center, Joliet Illinois, confessed assassin James Earl Files tells of his role in The Crime of the Century.

In 1989, Houston private investigator Joe West launched an independent investigation to find the true assassins of President John F. Kennedy. After three years of disappointments and dead-ends, West received a tip from an unexpected source: an FBI agent who asked to remain nameless. The tip led Joe West to Stateville Correctional Center at Joliet Illinois, and a prisoner named James E. Files.

Files, who was serving time for attempted murder of an Illinois police officer, was at first, very reluctant to talk. Slowly and meticulously, West established a relationship with Files. Through months of personal visits and detailed correspondence, Files began to reveal his participation in the JFK assassination.

Files was nearing a full confession when West became ill and suddenly passed away in 1993. It took 13 months after Joe West’s death, but on March 22, 1994, associates of West’s videotaped an interview with Files. It was during this interview that James Files first confessed to being the shooter on the grassy knoll in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, that it was he who delivered the final, fatal shot to JFK’s right temple. He also implicated organized crime members Charles Nicoletti, Johnny Roselli and Sam Giancana, who all had been murdered in the 1970s.

For the next two frustrating years, attempts were made to bring the interview to the public. This finally led to an agreement for a nationwide TV program. As the program was being prepared, a consultant became involved. Based on his input, the program was suddenly cancelled for reasons that have since been proven to be untrue. Also, reputable JFK researchers have confirmed that the consultant was solidly connected to the Central Intelligence Agency.

Upon his retirement in 1998, the FBI agent who had given the original tip on James Files, decided to come forward. His name is Zack Shelton. Mr. Shelton, who worked organized crime for 28 years, has had an impeccable service record. With the financial support of Dutch businessman Wim Dankbaar, Shelton offered to proceed with a new investigation to either prove or disprove the confession of James E. Files. Shelton called upon and received the assistance of over ten of his veteran FBI colleagues. All of these men have had equally impressive careers with the Bureau.

While the FBI has officially declared James Files to be "not credible," the findings of Shelton and his colleagues have shown otherwise. After painstaking efforts to persuade Files, who had vowed to never again be interviewed, he ultimately agreed to another interview. The second and last interview was taped on November 19, 2003.

An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King [read excerpts online for free] by William F. Pepper, Verso in London, 2008.

The definitive account of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, published on the 40th anniversary of his death.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most powerful and eloquent champion of the poor and oppressed in US history, and at the height of his fame in the mid-sixties seemed to offer the real possibility of a new and radical beginning for liberal politics in the USA. In 1968, he was assassinated; the movement for social and economic change has never recovered.

The conviction of James Earl Ray for his murder has never looked even remotely safe, and when William Pepper began to investigate the case it was the start of a twenty-five year campaign for justice. At a civil trial in 1999, supported by the King family, seventy witnesses under oath set out the details of the conspiracy Pepper had unearthed: the jury took just one hour to find that Ray was not responsible for the assassination, that a wide-ranging conspiracy existed, and that government agents were involved.

An Act of State lays out the extraordinary facts of the King story—of the huge groundswell of optimism engendered by his charismatic radicalism, of how plans for his execution were laid at the very heart of government and the military, of the disinformation and media cover-ups that followed every attempt to search out the truth. As shocking as it is tragic, An Act of State remains the most compelling and authoritative account of how King’s challenge to the US establishment led inexorably to his murder.

The Franklin Cover-Up: Child Abuse, Satanism, and Murder in Nebraska [read online for free] by John W. DeCamp, AWT in Lincoln, Nebraska, 1992.

The shut-down of Omaha, Nebraska’s Franklin Community Federal Credit Union, raided by federal agencies in November 1988, sent shock waves all the way to Washington, D.C. $40 million was missing. The credit unions manager: Republican Party activist Lawrence E. "Larry" King, Jr., behind whose rise to fame and riches stood powerful figures in Nebraska politics and business, and in the nation’s capital.

In the face of opposition from local and state law enforcement, from the FBI, and from the powerful Omaha World-Herald newspaper, a special Franklin committee of the Nebraska Legislature launched its own probe. What looked like a financial swindle, soon exploded into a hideous tale of drugs, Iran-Contra money-laundering, a nationwide child abuse ring, and ritual murder.

Nineteen months later, the legislative committee’s chief investigator died—suddenly, and violently, like more than a dozen other people linked to the Franklin case.

Author John DeCamp knows the Franklin scandal from the inside. In 1990, his "DeCamp memo" first publicly named the alleged high-ranking abusers. Today, he is attorney for two of the abuse victims.

Using documentation never before made public, DeCamp lays bare not only the crimes, but the cover-up—a textbook case of how dangerous the corruption of institutions of government, and the press, can be. In its sweep and in what it portends for the nation, the Franklin Cover-Up followed the ugly precedent of the Warren Commission.

During 16 years in office, former state Senator John DeCamp was cited, even by his enemies at the World Herald, as one of the most effective legislators in Nebraska history. A highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, in 1975 he initiated Operation Baby Lift, which evacuated 2,800 orphaned Vietnamese children. He practices law in Lincoln, Nebraska, is married, and is the father of four children.

Operation Mind Control: Our Secret Government’s War Against Its Own People [read online for free] by W.H. Bowart, Dell Publishing in New York, 1978.

For over 25 years, the CIA has been developing a technology of terror!

It’s purpose: to devise operational techniques to disturb the memory, to discredit people through apparent behavior, to alter sex patterns, to illicit information and to create emotional dependence.

It’s goal: to program individuals to carry out any mission of espionage or assassination, even against their will…even against such fundamental laws of nature like self-preservation.

NOW… against a backdrop of more than 2000 CIA documents and 1200 pages of testimony, Operation Mind Control tells the story of the hidden government’s failures—those people who despite memory smudging techniques can still recall and relate the shocking details of such experience. Every American should know what is in this book.

Trance: Formation of America [read online for free] by Cathy O’Brien and Mark Phillips, Reality Marketing in Guntersville, 2005.

On August 3rd, 1977 the 95th U.S. Congress opened hearings into the reported abuses concerning the CIA’s TOP SECRET mind control research program code named MK-Ultra. On February 8th, 1988, a top-level MK-Ultra victim, Cathy O’Brien, was covertly rescued from her mind control enslavement by Intelligence insider Mark Phillips. Their seven year pursuit of Justice was stopped FOR REASONS OF NATIONAL SECURITY. TRANCE Formation of America exposes the truth behind this covert government program and its ultimate goal: psychological control of a nation.

TRANCE Formation of America is the first documented autobiography of a victim of government mind control. Cathy O’Brien is the only vocal and recovered survivor of the Central Intelligence Agency’s MK-Ultra Project Monarch operation. Tracing her path from child pornography and recruitment into the program to serving as a top-level intelligence agent and White House sex slave, TRANCE Formation of America is a definitive eye-witness account of government corruption that implicates some of the most prominent figures in U.S. politics.

She has been a consultant to an on-line survivors group that helps people dealing with issues related to cult programming and ritual abuse. Svali, a writer and a registered nurse, has self-published a book on breaking free of cult programming, which several experts in the field have said has "invaluable information" for the survivor of ritual abuse.

Military Mind Control: A Story of Trauma and Recovery [read excerpts online for free] by Colin A. Ross, Manitou Communicatinos in Richardson, Texas, 2009.

Military Mind Control provides a single case history written by Dr. Ross. Terese, a woman treated in Dr. Ross’ private practice, is a survivor of childhood trauma that included paternal incest, ritual abuse and military mind control. The case history describes the therapeutic goals, tasks, strategies and principles that have contributed to her recovery, including the principle of therapeutic neutrality. It is a documented fact that victims of CIA and military mind control experimentation have been hypnotized, given hallucinogens, held in sensory deprivation chambers, given massive amounts of electroshock and subjected to unethical, inhumane treatment by psychiatrists. Therefore, although Terese’s participation in a military mind control program is unproven, it could very well be real.

The Illuminati Formula Used to Create an Undetectable Total Mind Controlled Slave [read online for free] by Fritz Springmeier and Cisco Wheeler, Springmeier & Wheeler in Oregon City, Oregon, 1996.

When the mind and emotions are put under extreme stress they "break" and create a new mental-emotional state. It is within these mental states—born of trauma—that the mind can be conditioned. That someone would do this intentionally is unthinkable yet it has been done and tested to the degree of a science. "Trauma Based Mind Control" has been used by criminal organizations to maintain secrecy and ensure every order is followed to the letter. Through this process you get the Undetectable Total Mind Controlled Slave. Trauma Based Mind Control creates separate personalities within the individual that will carry out their duty with robotic exactness and then "sleep" so that the individual has no memory of their actions. These people are used as messengers, drug mules, sexual blackmail slaves and are placed in positions close to the worlds most powerful people. In short, they are used to manipulate and control the lives of the world elite.

American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us [read online for free] by Jesse Ventura and Dick Russell, Skyhorse Publishing in New York, 2010.

In this explosive account of wrongful acts and on-going cover-ups, Jesse Ventura takes a systematic look at the wide gap between what the American government knows and what it reveals to the American people. For too long, we the people have sat by and let politicians and bureaucrats from both parties obfuscate and lie. And according to this former Navy SEAL, former pro wrestler, and former Minnesota governor, the media is complicit in these acts of deception. For too long, the mainstream press has refused to consider alternate possibilities and to ask the tough questions. Here, Ventura looks closely at the theories that have been presented over the years and separates the fact from the fiction.

In Ventura’s eyes, the murder of Abraham Lincoln and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, all need to be re-examined. Was Watergate presented honestly, or was the CIA involved? Did the Republican Party set out to purposefully steal two elections on behalf of George W. Bush? Has all the evidence been presented about the 9/11 attacks or is there another angle that the media is afraid to explore? And finally, is the collapse of today’s financial order and the bailout plan by the Federal Reserve the widest-reaching conspiracy ever perpetrated?

Assault on the Liberty [read excerpts online for free] by James M. Ennes, Jr., Reintree Press in Woodinville, 2007.

In June 1967, jet aircraft and motor torpedo boats of Israel brutally assaulted an American naval vessel, the USS Liberty, in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. The attack was preceded by more than six hours of intense low-level surveillance by Israeli photo-reconnaissance aircraft, which buzzed the intelligence ship thirteen times, sometimes flying as low as 200 feet directly overhead. The carefully orchestrated assault that followed was initiated by high-performance jet aircraft, was followed up by slower and more maneuverable jets carrying napalm, and was finally turned over to lethal torpedo boats, which blasted a forty-foot hole in the ship’s side.

The attack lasted more than two hours—killing 34 Americans and wounding 171 others—and inflicted 821 rocket and machine-gun holes in the ship. And when the Liberty stubbornly remained afloat despite her damage, Israeli forces machine-gunned her life rafts and sent troop-carrying helicopters in to finish the job. At this point, with Sixth Fleet rescue aircraft finally en route, the government of Israel apologized and the attacking forces suddenly withdrew. Only then did the identity of the assailants become known.

Details of the attack were hushed up in both countries. Israel claimed that her forces mistook the Liberty for an Egyptian ship, and our government quietly accepted that excuse despite evidence to the contrary. Then our government downplayed the intensity of the surveillance and the severity of the attack, and imposed a news blackout to keep the story under control. The official version is that the Liberty was reconnoitered only three times and then only from great distance. The American people were told that the air attack lasted only five minutes and that it was followed by a single torpedo and an immediate apology and offer of assistance. Now, after more than twelve years of research and dozens of interviews with government executives, military officers and Liberty survivors, a former ship’s officer who was there reveals the inside story of the assault on the USS Liberty and of our government’s attempt to keep the truth from public knowledge.

63 Documents the Government Doesn’t Want You to Read [read excerpts online for free] by Jesse Ventura and Dick Russell, Skyhorse Publishing in New York, 2011.

There’s the Freedom of Information Act, and then there’s Ventura’s way.

The official spin on numerous government programs is flat-out bullshit, according to Jesse Ventura. In this incredible collection of actual government documents, Ventura, the ultimate non-partisan truth-seeker, proves it beyond any doubt. He and Dick Russell walk readers through 63 of the most incriminating programs to reveal what really happens behind the closed doors. In addition to providing original government data, Ventura discusses what it really means and how regular Americans can stop criminal behavior at the top levels of government and in the media. Among the cases discussed:

  • The CIA’s top-secret program to control human behavior
  • Operation Northwoods—the military plan to hijack airplanes and blame it on Cuban terrorists
  • The discovery of a secret Afghan archive—information that never left the boardroom
  • Potentially deadly healthcare cover-ups, including a dengue fever outbreak
  • What the Department of Defense knows about our food supply—but is keeping mum

Although these documents are now in the public domain, the powers that be would just as soon they stay under wraps. Ventura’s research and commentary sheds new light on what they’re not telling you—and why it matters.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire [read online for free] by Edward Gibbon and David P. Womersley, Penguin in New York, 2005.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire was written by English historian Edward Gibbon and published in six volumes. Volume I was published in 1776, and went through six printings. Volumes II and III were published in 1781; volumes IV, V, VI in 1788–89. The original volumes were published in quarto sections, a common publishing practice of the time. It stands as a major literary achievement of the 18th century because it was adopted as a model for the methodologies of modern historians. This led to Gibbon being called the first modern historian of Ancient Rome.

The Prince [read online for free] [hear online for free] by Niccolò Machiavelli, Antonio Blado d’Asola in Florence, 1532.

Niccolò Machiavelli’s best-known book concentrates on the possibility of a "new prince", rather than the more traditional subject of an hereditary prince. To retain power, the hereditary prince must carefully maintain the socio-political institutions to which the people are accustomed; whereas a new prince has the more difficult task in ruling, since he must first stabilize his new-found power in order to build an enduring political structure. That requires the prince being concerned with reputation but also being willing to act immorally. As a political scientist, Machiavelli emphasises the occasional need for the methodical exercise of brute force, deceit, and so on.
